A channel playing inside a connected-TV app can involve a content owner, channel operator, distributor and app operator. The television's operating system may sell an additional sponsored discovery tile. Being visible on the same device does not give one party authority over every opportunity.
Build an allocation map
| Opportunity | Control to establish | Separate evidence |
|---|---|---|
| App player or interface | The app's authorized placement and delivery system. | App requests, supported delivery and owner receipts. |
| FAST channel break | Contractual seconds or positions assigned to each seller. | Break execution and income for the allocated share. |
| TV home screen or operating system | The OEM or other authorized platform operator's surface. | Supported discovery-placement delivery and its allocation. |
CTV Apps, FAST Channels and Smart TV & OEM Inventory describe these different operating settings. A paused app placement is not automatically an operating-system placement. A common channel break is not automatically owned entirely by the app carrying it.
Follow only the share you can sell
In a FAST agreement, identify the actual owner-controlled seconds or positions, reserved content, priorities and revenue splits. A content owner's report and a distributor's report may describe different shares of the same viewing session. Do not count the full break twice when consolidating a portfolio.
For example, imagine a channel owner whose assigned positions return mostly unpaid filler while a distributor sells its separate share successfully. More channel views cannot explain the owner's retained income without those allocations. The first review follows the owner's positions through decision, insertion, fallback and remittance.
Keep delivery and economics together
An app or channel pilot needs supported devices, valid opportunities, timing, available demand, successful playback and continuity. An operating-system pilot needs separate surface authority, creative and user-navigation controls. The appropriate technical and commercial tests differ.
Reconcile the retained share after relevant fees and allocations. A gross figure for the whole channel or platform can conceal weak owner economics even when the programme has a large audience.
Agree on one controlled pilot
For a first route, choose a defined allocation and prove that the authorized team can sell, deliver and report it. For an earning operation, start with the share whose discrepancy can be explained and corrected. State the selling authority, operating responsibilities and comparison before altering priorities.
