Rewarded Ads & Game Economics

Make the reward work for the game

An extra life can create an ad opportunity and change player behaviour. Evaluate the reward, reliable delivery and the economics of the whole title.

Illustrative opt-in reward offer. The product test also follows actual grants, player outcomes and retained income.

A rewarded ad trades a defined player benefit for a qualifying ad interaction. Its value depends on the moment, the offer and what happens after the player returns. A strong ad price cannot compensate for a broken grant or a reward that weakens progression and purchases.

Separate the three player experiences

An opt-in rewarded placement offers a clear choice before the player starts the ad. A rewarded interstitial can appear at a natural transition with reward information and the required opportunity to decline. An ordinary interstitial interrupts at an appropriate transition without offering that reward exchange.

The provider's requirements and the game's supported implementation determine the exact flow. For example, Google AdMob's rewarded interstitial documentation requires an introductory screen with reward messaging and a skip option. Treat that as a requirement for that implementation, rather than assuming every provider has an identical interface.

Make the grant trustworthy

Document what the player receives, when it becomes available and which supported callback or verification method authorizes the grant. Check what happens when an ad is unavailable, playback fails, the application is interrupted or a callback repeats.

The player should return to a coherent game state. The team also needs a clear distinction between offered rewards, accepted offers, qualifying ad events and actual grants. A completion report and a successful inventory update are separate records.

Read the economics beyond the ad

Advertising revenue per daily active user, often called ad ARPDAU, can help compare results when its reporting period and revenue basis are consistent. Read it alongside retention, session behaviour, purchases, reward use and net owner income. A rise in ad income can conceal a loss elsewhere in the title.

Consider an illustrative extra-life offer after a failed level. It may help players continue; it may also reduce the reason to buy a life pack. The useful test asks whether the overall result improves for comparable players while preserving a fair progression system. It does not assume that either effect must occur.

Start with one reward and one moment

Choose a defined player group and transition. Set the reward, eligibility, provider requirements, timing and frequency rules with the product team. Compare reliable grants, retained revenue and player outcomes against an agreed baseline or suitable control.

For a new title, establish feasibility and the complete reward flow first. For an earning title, diagnose offer acceptance, availability, playback and grant problems separately. Mobile Games explains the environment; Improve Ad Revenue covers the review of an existing operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about rewarded ads & game economics and how a monetization review can begin.

Is rewarded interstitial the same as a voluntary rewarded ad?

No. The initiation and disclosure rules differ; define and measure each separately.

Could an ad earn more while the game earns less?

Yes, if it weakens purchases, retention or progression economics.

What if the player watches but gets no reward?

Treat that as a delivery/grant defect and reconcile the ad and reward events before scaling.

Should every player receive the same offer?

No. Evaluate eligibility, player context and progression before testing a placement across cohorts.
