TV, Video & Streaming

Compare ad breaks, player and TV-interface placements, and in-scene advertising. The channel, app, device and delivery operator can control different inventory.

IP streams can select ads by session

Supported insertion can select creative at a video break. The spot or pod is the format; insertion is the delivery process.

Understand video insertion
A common TV feed carries a shared spot

Separate regional feeds and supported DTH receiver replacement use different delivery paths.

Timeline illustration of three separate ad positions: before, at a planned break and after a programme.

Pre/Mid/Post-Roll

A video ad plays before a programme, during a planned break or after it ends, inside the player or feed.

Where it fits

Online video, VOD/AVOD, CTV, eligible FAST and live streams. A post-roll needs a viewer who reaches the end; a live break needs a cue and safe return. Supported insertion can vary creative without changing the format.

What we review

Eligible plays and breaks, filled opportunities, actual playback, completion, errors, ad load and net revenue per viewing hour.

Discuss this format
Two successive ads share one break; the final spot signals the return to the show.

Ad Pod

Several ads run in a defined sequence within one break, then the programme resumes.

Where it fits

VOD, CTV apps and FAST channels with supported breaks and clear seller allocation. Insertion may assemble the pod for a session; the pod organizes spots and is not an extra impression on top of them.

What we review

Break length, eligible positions, repetition rules, actual plays, fallback, viewer abandonment and recognized revenue.

Discuss this format
A planned pause, a labeled commercial break, then a return to the live event.

Live Break

An ad runs at a planned or safely signaled pause in a live event, followed by a return to the programme.

Where it fits

Live streams and eligible sports feeds. Supported insertion needs timely cues and fallback; a missed break should not move the ad into a decisive event moment.

What we review

Cue availability, decision timing, successful insertion, fallback, return time, destination discrepancies and net yield.

Discuss this format
The programme is paused and remains identifiable beside the ad.

CTV/App Pause

An ad appears in a defined part of the paused player while the programme remains identifiable and easy to resume.

Where it fits

Eligible CTV apps and owned players controlling the pause interface. Ownership of the television does not establish ownership of another company’s app placement.

What we review

Pause events, visible exposure, rendering, duration, frequency and resume behavior.

Discuss this format
Two separate surfaces: a sponsored TV-home tile and a sponsored tile inside a streaming app.

TV Menu & Discovery

A labeled sponsored tile appears in a TV home screen, menu or discovery experience around viewing decisions.

Where it fits

Smart TV/OEM interfaces and separate menus inside owned CTV apps. Identify the actual placement owner and supported device or app versions.

What we review

Active eligible devices, menu visits, rendered exposures, navigation effects, frequency and net yield, rather than televisions shipped.

Discuss this format
Branded idle screensaver with a dismissal instruction; no paused programme is shown.

Screensaver

An ad appears when a supported TV platform or app enters an idle-screen state, rather than when the viewer pauses a programme.

Where it fits

Smart TV/OEM or other eligible TV experiences with idle-placement control and a supported buying and rendering path. Review activation, display safeguards and dismissal.

What we review

Active eligible devices, idle events, actual renders, exposure and product impact.

Discuss this format
A disclosed lower-third ad overlays the playing programme; the main picture stays full size.

Overlay / Lower Third

A disclosed ad appears in a safe area over a playing programme, often along an edge or lower portion of the picture.

Where it fits

Supported live streams, CTV players and controlled broadcast feeds. Keep key action and essential captions visible, with the correct production and buying route.

What we review

Safe-area fit, display duration, creative quality, viewer response, delivery proof and separately recognized income.

Discuss this format
The programme continues in a smaller pane; the ad uses separate screen space.

Squeezeback

The programme shrinks within the screen so an ad can share the frame. It occupies separate space rather than overlaying the picture.

Where it fits

Eligible broadcast or CTV production and player paths. Choose a suitable moment and preserve programme legibility and visual hierarchy.

What we review

Eligible exposures, actual rendering, duration, audience complaints and net economics.

Discuss this format
Illustrative scene comparison: branding is inserted into the wall screen while the scene remains intact.

In-Scene / Virtual Product

A brand appears on a screen, sign or object within a film, series, entertainment programme or eligible sports scene, without a conventional break.

Where it fits

VOD/AVOD owners and sports-feed operators controlling and approving the placement. Programmatic availability also requires a suitable buying, insertion and verification path; virtual insertion alone does not establish it. This concerns advertising placements, not selling programme rights.

What we review

Scene suitability, approvals, placement variants, delivered version, verification and commercial allocation.

Discuss this format
Two illustrative feed versions of the same match: neutral boards and a virtual branded sign.

Sports Feed Virtual Sign

A virtual sign appears in the transmitted match picture. Viewers of that feed can see a different execution from the physical signs inside the venue.

Where it fits

Sports broadcast and stream operators with feed control, production integration and approved creative. Regional variants require separate supported production and distribution; a programmatic offer also needs a workable automated buying path.

What we review

Feed variant, camera coverage, insertion reliability, visible exposure, fallback and delivery proof.

Discuss this format
One common-feed commercial reaches all three receiving households.

Linear & Satellite Feed Spot

A conventional commercial plays in a scheduled broadcast or satellite break. Everyone receiving that common feed sees the same transmitted spot.

Where it fits

Broadcast networks and satellite channels controlling sellable ad time. Buying or booking may be automated. Separate regional feeds can differ; household replacement needs an additional supported operator or receiver path.

What we review

Allocated spots, bookings, traffic logs, actual airing, feed variants, makegoods, discrepancies and net recognized revenue.

Discuss this format
The eligible receiver shows a replacement ad; other receivers keep the common-feed spot.

DTH Receiver Replacement

At a designated break, a compatible set-top box replaces the common-feed ad for an eligible household. Other receivers continue with the feed or defined fallback.

Where it fits

DTH operators with ad allocation, compatible receivers and a decision, delivery and measurement system. Supported replacement can use eligible operator criteria; a satellite channel cannot offer it just by transmitting a feed.

What we review

Operator-controlled opportunities, eligible receivers, successful replacement, fallback, delivery proof and net economics, rather than subscriber count alone.

Discuss this format
Illustrative watch-page ads and a creator revenue view; available formats follow platform rules.

YouTube-Native Ads

YouTube’s own advertising appears around eligible video, live and Shorts viewing under its platform controls. This is separate from connecting channel inventory to an external SSP.

Where it fits

YouTube channel owners seeking help with authorized setup, settings, content operations and revenue interpretation. Platform eligibility, reported views, advertising revenue and payouts are distinct; approval or a particular payment route is not promised.

What we review

Available YouTube Studio settings and reports, policy status, authorized access and the owner’s revenue decision.

Selection & delivery

How an ad reaches the audience

A format describes the placement the audience experiences. Geographic selection, insertion and receiver replacement describe how a creative is chosen and delivered. Availability depends on the placement owner and supported systems.

Geographic ad selection

Supported digital requests can use permitted market signals to select creative for the same web, game, video or audio placement. DOOH uses a screen’s fixed location and schedule. A common broadcast feed carries a shared ad; separate regional feeds or supported replacement need a different path.

Dynamic video insertion

A compatible IP player or stream inserts selected creative at an eligible VOD, CTV, FAST or live break. Client-side and server-side paths need break signals, decision time, device support, fallback and playback evidence. In-stream spots, pods and live breaks describe the visible formats.

Dynamic audio insertion

A supported stream or podcast fills an eligible audio slot as listening content is delivered. Cueing, hosting and usable request signals determine the route. A download does not prove a complete listen. Compare streamed audio, podcast slots and the separate shared playout of a broadcast radio spot.

Addressable replacement & feed variants

Everyone receiving the same linear or satellite feed sees its transmitted spot. Separate regional feeds can differ. Supported DTH receiver replacement substitutes an ad at a designated break for an eligible household, while other receivers use the common feed or defined fallback. IP insertion is a separate delivery path.
